Application for internship for Assistant/Programming Manager, Vasantham

Dear Sir/Madam,

From the MediaCorp website I learnt about your job vacancy for the position of Assistant/Programming Manager for Vasantham. I am very keen in applying for this position with Vasantham, and I believe that my education, employment background and personal experiences are appropriate for this position.

In your pre-requisites, you have indicated that a good degree and a minimum of 3-year work experience with media or a related industry is required, as well as a passion for the media. I am currently an undergraduate in NUS studying Mechanical Engineering. For about 10 years now, I have been actively involved in theatre and dance productions. I have overseen, directed as well as participated in productions with schools, institutions as well as productions houses such as act3. When I was a student in Anderson Junior College, I was the President of the Tamil Language Debate and Drama Society and I have written scripts, directed drama plays and choreographed dance items for competitions and in-house productions.

In 2011, I worked with Dance Bollywood International (DBI) as a choreographer and performer for a charity show, “Smile 2 Live”, to raise funds for the Childrens’ Cancer Foundation. As a student of NUS, I am currently  in ‘NUS DanceBlast!’, a hip-hop CCA and I actively seek participation in dance, drama and short-film features.

I believe my passion for the Arts, media and the production process as well as my years of experience have made me a more creative person in this line of work. I hope that you would consider me as a candidate for the job vacancy. I have attached my resume for your reference and will be more than glad to clarify any questions you may have.  I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you very much for your kind consideration.
Sincerely,
Surendran Jeremiah

  1. Hi Suren

Thanks for posting your job application!
    Here’re my comments.

Overall, I felt that your letter flows well and expresses your intent and (very rich) experience very clearly as well as your effort to make sure that you “fulfill” the criteria of the job description.

However, I also feel that what you wrote could have a better structure. When you mention a particular example, it should substantiate a particular quality you possess rather than just having two paragraphs just stating what you’ve done; e.g. “I believe I am well-equipped in XXXXXXX/ I have the qualities of XXXXXXX, as I have overseen, directed as well as participated in productions with schools, institutions as well as productions houses such as Act3.” At the same time, also elaborating about particular “success stories”, so that it provides an avenue for the interviewers/ who ever is reading your letter to ask you more about it should you get shortlisted for the interviews.

Another comment I would have is that, I would also elaborate on how your engineering (you’re doing engineering right) degree will help your job as well. Something along the lines of being multidisciplinary, maybe?

Last thing is that your address should be the first thing on the letter, followed by the date, then the HR dept’s address!

I hope these suggestions help a wee bit!! All the best.

    Regards
    Eunice S.

  2. Hi Suren,

I really like your application letter. It is Concise, Correctly written and has a good structure. You are starting with your objective then moving on to the two sections about your experience in the field. The last paragraph sums it up very well by explaining how the skills you’ve acquired will be of use for the company. I have just a few comments that could help you improve the letter even further.

In your letter you are showing that you have a true interest in the industry. The reader will probably also expect you to be attracted by the company as well. This can easily be done just by elaborating a bit on why you picked just Vasantham. If you just add one line about how appealing their company is to you will most definitely make the reader feel like you have sent the application exclusively to them.

The job ad has a long list of requirements such as strong project management and interpersonal skills. I saw your CV yesterday and I’m sure that you can find something when you were able to demonstrate such skills. It always an advantage if the reader can link the requirements to your skills.

    Good luck!
    William
